Mahón

Located at the eastern coastal part, Mahón is said to be the largest city of the island of Menorca. Mahon, is more famous as Mao for the locals of Menorca, and the city is the current capital of the island, succeeding Ciutadella. Its present day inhabitants reach up to around 30,000. Mahon covers a land area of 109,000 square kilometers that consists of several nature sights sure to capture your delight. Mahon is also rich with history, made evident by its scenic harbor, traditional edifices, and time honored shops and restaurants.

Mahón was named in favor of the Carthaginian general Mago. This town is more particularly known for its splendid natural harbor, safeguarded by two strongholds. It is also an important air and naval base.

Mahón and the adjacent town of Villacarlos will give you an idea about British occupation during the past centuries, with their dazzling Georgian architecture and Chippendale imitation. The Golden Farm, which is a celebrated manor house located at the north of the town, overlooks the harbor and was once taken in full use by Admiral Lord Nelson way back in 1799. Legend has it that this is where he tucked away with his mistress, Emma Hamilton. This fortress was also where Lord Nelson worked on his autobiography entitled Sketches of My Life.

The improvements that have been done by the local government of Mahon have given even more splendor to the historical sites of the city, launching them as strong, remarkable symbols of the city of Mahon. Several new buildings, hotels, shops, and restaurants have also been inaugurated, offering more options for the ever increasing number of tourists.

Touring Mahon can be expensive or it may be otherwise, depending on your choice of accommodation and activities. Hotels with more up to date amenities are of course a little bit costly. Nonetheless, these top class accommodations will surely be worth your money. If you are on a budget, head for the local tapas bars. These gastronomic hangouts not only offer tapas on their menu, they include other delicious Menorcan eats that you have probably never tasted before. More or less, around US $50 or less will be enough for you to spend in a day when in Mahon. For really economical nonstop entertainment, nothing comes second to the Menorcan beaches!
