Menorca Shopping

The Balearic Islands are endowed with worthy shopping areas and the island of Menorca is no exception, being occupied with numerous interesting shops and unique markets that sell a broad assortment of commodities.

The quality of the shops in Menorca has been enhanced, rising a notch or two higher over the past few years, particularly in Mahón and Ciutadella.

Markets in Menorca provide the ideal place to purchase some of the freshest food and produce in the city, which are, more often than not, priced at very realistic and practical rates. In the months of August and September, expect the “sale season” to start, coined as “rebaixes” in the local language. The leather goods in this part of the world are of very good quality and certainly cost less than anywhere else in Europe. The same goes for pottery items.

Most shops are open by 10 in the morning and close for the siesta or midday sleep at around 1:30 in the afternoon. They reopen at around 5:00 pm and close at around 7:30 pm to 8:00 pm. The larger shops in Menorca generally open from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, particularly in the tourist centers. The series of beachfront shops stay open until late at night. During the peak season, most shops in Menorca open seven days a week. Provincial towns and villages do not usually have such regular opening hours and are not really aimed at tourists as main customers. Banks are only open in the mornings, but there are cash points (ATM's) virtually everywhere. Visa and MasterCard credit cards are accepted throughout the island. However, American Express and Diners Card are seldom useful.

The markets or the swap meets offer a great opportunity to try the local specialties of Menorca. Most markets and schedule bazaars in and around Menorca are inclined to vend a little of everything and present enjoyable ways to shop. It will surely give you a little practice on your haggling skills.
